STUDENTS’ INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION IN LEARNING ENGLISH AT SMP NEGERI 2 BATU PUTIH
The aims of the research were to observe the students’ level of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in learning English and the factors that students perceived about their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This research used explanatory sequential mixed methods design. This research instrument was used Gardner’s Mini-AMTB questionnaires and open-ended interview. There are 69 respondents from 3 classes of SMP Negeri 2 Batu Putih in Tembudan village. The result of the quantitative section showed that mean of intrinsic motivation level is 3.87 and extrinsic motivation level is 3.79. The descriptive data showed the students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation level are high. The result of interview showed the perceived factors that affect students’ motivation are (1) willingness or interest to the English subject, (2) self-efficacy and (3) classroom/school environment. Students with moderate motivation, either intrinsically or extrinsically, had problem maintaining their motivation in learning English.
