A Correlation Study Between Students' Self-Efficacy and Their Engagement in Speaking English during Online Learning Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

This study aims to: (1) identify the level of students' self-efficacy; (2) identify the level of students' engagement; (3) identify the correlation between students' selfefficacy and their engagement in speaking English during online learning amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. This research is quantitative research, which applied a correlational research method. The data of this research were collected through questionnaires and analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS Statistics 23 Program. There were thirty-five students of the fifth semester of English Department students in the academic year 2021/2022 of the English Language Education Department at Mulawarman University participated in this research. The findings of the study showed that the level of students’ self-efficacy and students’ engagement was categorized at the medium level. Furthermore, the results also showed the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 which is lower than the significant level of 0.05 and the coefficient correlation value was 0.591. This means Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant positive correlation between students' self-efficacy and their engagement in speaking English during online learning amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic at a moderate level. It also means that students with good self-efficacy were engaged more in speaking English during online learning.
