THE PROBLEMS IN IMPLEMENTING EMERGENCY REMOTE TEACHING IN ENGLISH CLASS AT SMPN 3 TERING

The purpose of this study was to know the teachers’ conduct, perceived problems and solution toward problems during implementing emergency remote teaching at SMPN 3 Tering. The design of this study was qualitative design. The sample of this study was one sole English teacher from SMPN 3 Tering and three students of SMPN 3 Tering. The instrument of this study was interview sets. The data was presented in transcripts and proper coding has been done to explain the nature of teacher’s response, their perceived obstacles and the solutions, while the data from the students was used to support the teacher’s claim.
Regarding what actions the teacher conducted to handle and adapt the changing condition of class during emergency remote teaching, the results concluded that the teacher had adapted to easier approach of using Whatsapp, with pre-teaching, while-teaching and post-teaching activities done using long distance monitoring, which, considering the limitation caused by the regional condition and gadget, is considered a practical way and response to continue teaching English during emergency remote teaching.
To understand the problems faced by the teacher during emergency remote teaching, including the advantage and disadvantage they felt, the results showed that while there are benefits like saving travel expense and being able to browse materials using phone, the biggest problem faced is technical difficulties due to poor internet connection, individual home condition and budget problem, which result in the suboptimal educational progress which the students could not receive the understanding of the material really well because some of them could not attend class, resulting in low score.
Lastly, to see what solution had been offered and done to handle the problems as stated above, the results explained that the school faculty had tried to assess the situation and providing students’ free internet quota from government. From the result, it is also known that the teacher considered the students’ limitations and thus adapting by using Whatsapp as main teaching media, and the students are helping their fellow classmates who do not have suitable gadget by sharing the phone usage and learning together.
