The Portrayal of Kahu Paikea's Masculinity as a Female Character in Whale Rider Novel
This research aims to analyze the masculinity of the female character, Kahu Paikea, in Whale Rider novel, written by Witi Ihimaera in 1987. The focuses of this research were the masculinity traits represented by Kahu and how Kahu’s character was described in Whale Rider novel. The data in this research were words and sentences which are taken from monologues and dialogues related to Kahu Paikea's masculinity traits. This research used qualitative descriptive to analyze the data. The results of this study show that Kahu as the main female character has nine types of masculinity traits such as acting as a leader, being ambitious, assertive, analytical, masculine, self-reliant, having a strong personality, being willing to take a stand, and being willing to take risks. All these masculinity traits were characterized by dialogue, hidden narration, language, and action.
