The Analysis of Reading Texts' Readability in English Textbooks Entitled “BAHASA INGGRIS” for Senior High School
Reading texts or passages from textbooks are commonly used as learning materials. This leads to the rise of readability or reading level for reading materials using formulas developed for English native speakers. However, alternative readability formulas for EFL materials are relatively new and underrated. Hence, this study aims to find out the readability level of reading texts in senior high school English textbooks entitled ‘Bahasa Inggris’ by The Ministry of Education and Culture in terms of measuring reading level without grade-levelling and simplifying EFL reading materials. This research is a quantitative content analysis study and data collection is conducted by using two EFL readability formulas, Miyazaki EFL readability index and McAlpine EFLAW formula. The results showed that the overall Miyazaki EFL readability score of all reading texts in 10th, 11th, 12th grade English textbooks is 50. This is interpreted as having standard difficulty. Meanwhile, based on McAlpine EFLAW readability formula, the overall readability score is 20,86 and considered very easy to understand. It is concluded that all reading texts in three textbooks are suitable and understandable for the intended students.
