Rejective Behaviors toward the Black People in John Briley’s Cry Freedom Novel
In South Africa, black people take the most population than white people, colored people, and Indians/Asians. However, they as the majority still suffer from unpleasant treatments as rejection from white people who are powerful in the society. This research aims to identify the types of rejective behavior that the black people experienced in John Briley’s Cry Freedom novel and to discuss how their responses to those actions are represented by using Allport’s rejective behaviors theory, Mellor’s responses to racism theory, and Rimmon-Kenan’s characterization theory. This research is a qualitative research that was conducted by using multicultural approach. The data source of this research is the simplified version of John Briley’s Cry Freedom novel. The data were collected in the forms of narrations and dialogues about the rejective behaviors that the black people experienced and their responses toward those actions. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found three types of rejective behaviors were portrayed in the novel through some black characters named Biko, Tenjy, Evalina, Peter, and other black people. They were verbal rejection, discrimination, and physical attack. Furthermore, the analysis showed that those characters depicted three types of response toward those actions, which were defensive response, controlled response, and confrontational response. They were represented in direct and indirect presentation in the novel. From those findings, the white people used their power to discriminate against the black people, and they would use verbal rejection and physical attack to the disobedient black people in order to expedite their discrimination.
