Anxiety and Defense Mechanism of Rick Dalton in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Film
Every human has experienced anxiety and they reduce it by defense mechanism, consciously or unconsciously. Anxiety is an unpleasant feeling in the form of worry or fear. When anxiety is overwhelmed, it must be reduced by defense mechanism which is a way to protect from excessive anxiety. In this study, the researcher found that Rick Dalton the main character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood suffers the psychological problem which is anxiety. Thus, this study aims to find out the kinds of the main character Rick Dalton's anxiety and to describe how the main character Rick Dalton uses the defense mechanism to cope with his anxiety that is portrayed in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood film. The method of this study is qualitative method, to explore the data and describe it. The theories used in this study are anxiety theory, defense mechanism theory, and characterization theory. The results of this study is that Rick Dalton suffers from all three kinds of anxiety, namely: neurotic anxiety, moral anxiety, and realistic anxiety. To reduce those anxieties, Rick Dalton uses four types of defense mechanisms, they are regression, fantasy, intellectualization, and aggression.
