The Portrayal of Violence Experienced by the Main Female Character in Niki Caro’s North Country Film
This research aims to analyze the types of violence experienced by the main female character in North Country Film. North Country is a 2005 American film directed by Niki Caro. The objective of this study is to describe how violence against women is showed through Josey Aimes as the main character in the film while the types of violence are shown by how men characters treated the main female character. In conducting this research, the researcher used the theory of violence by The Istanbul Convention. This research applies qualitative research design. The data are taken from narrations, dialogues, and scenes that are related to violence experienced by the main female character. The findings of this research showed that there are four types of violence experienced by the main female character that are portrayed in this film. First, psychological violence, sexual violence, physical violence, and the last economic violence in the form of the loss of security rights. Moreover, this research could bring the awareness of the readers of how women were treated and positioned by the majority of society. The violence against women can occur anywhere, from close people such as family and strangers. In conclusion, this research provided a deeper understanding of how violence experienced by the main female character in the North Country film
