ABSTRACT
Keji beling (Strobilanthes crispus) leaves is traditionally used as an alternative therapy for diabetes mellitus. This study was conducted to demonstrate the activity of keji beling leaf extract in lowering blood glucose levels and compare the effectiveness of a decrease in blood glucose levels between keji beling leaf extract with oral antidiabetic glibenclamide. This study uses an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). This study used 15 wistar strain male rats with weight between 200-250 grams. Rats were categorized as 5 groups: group in negative control which were given Na CMC, group of positive control which were given glibenclamide, and the three test groups which were given the extract with three variations of dosage are 50 mg/200gBB, 100 mg/200gBB, and 150 mg/200gBB. Glucose loading dose of 4,5 g/200gBB given orally 15 minutes after administration of extract. Blood sampling taken from a vein lateral rats at minute 0, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120 and 135. The results were analyzed visually based on the average volume decrease in blood glucose levels per time. The results showed that the leaf extract keji beling at a dose of 50 mg/200gBB, 100 mg/200gBB, and 150 mg/200gBB can lower blood glucose levels. Obtained the best dose is 100 mg/200gBB, but it has lower potential than glibenclamide.
