Racism in Mississippi Burning Film
The purpose of this research is to reveal what happened to black people in Mississippi, United States in the 19th century by finding the levels of racism and effects of racism as depicted in the Mississippi Burning film by using Jones’ theory. In this research, the researcher uses qualitative research and a mimetic approach. In this film, the researcher finds that there are three levels of racism: first, institutionalized racism which is marked by different qualities of public facilities and different traits from the staff of institutions. This can be seen by the black people had no voting rights. Second, personally mediated racism is marked by discrimination toward black people done by white people. Lastly, internalized racism is marked by the black people in Mississippi making a distance toward white people in society because they feel worthless and lower than the white people. Further, the researcher also finds two effects of racism toward black people. The first is positive effects which are motivation and feeling responsible, and the second is negative effects there are disfavour society and violence. Yet, inferiority complex is not found in this research. Hence, this research is expected to provide deeper understanding to the readers about the racial issues that may happen everywhere in this world. Further, it will also raise the awareness of the readers of racial issues.
