AN ANALYSIS OF PRESUPPOSITION ON THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 FILM
This study aims to determine the types of presupposition and presupposition cancellation identified by the main character, Abbie Hoffman, in The Trial of The Chicago 7 Film (2020). This study employed a descriptive qualitative method to describe data in words, phrases, and sentences. The researcher used the type of presupposition theory by George Yule and the presupposition cancellation theory by Levinson. The results showed that there were five types of presupposition found in this film those are existential, factive, lexical, structural, and counterfactual. The most common types that can be identified in the main character's utterances in this film are existential presuppositions. The type of presupposition that was not identified in the main character's utterances in this film is non factive, it is because the theme of the film is a historical drama based on a true story that tells all the facts about things that happened in the past. All the presupposition cancellations were identified in this film; they were prevailing assumptions, set of background beliefs, and contradictory presupposition. The researcher concluded that presupposition cancellation does not occur in all types of presuppositions. Presupposition cancellation can occur in the presence of rejection by the addressee.
