Anxiety is a person's troubling emotional experience when the sufferer feels too threatened in their daily life. Then, an unseen psychological method called defense mechanism tries to cope with the anxiety when it gets too demanding. Anxiety and defense mechanisms could be developed by children that come from broken families. Broken family is the condition where one of the family members is missing. The researcher conducted this research to discuss the anxiety and defense mechanisms on the main character of Alan Maley's The Best of Times? novel, since the effects of anxiety and defense mechanisms from broken family are frequently disregarded. Literature theory is applied to assess the character and characterization of the main character since a novel serves as the subject of this study. Psychoanalysis theory is used to analyze the character using psychological aspects as if he is a real person. Then anxiety and defense mechanism theory with psychoanalysis tripartite as supportive theory is used to identify the types of anxiety and defense mechanisms that happened in the novel. The data were collected using qualitative research method and analyzed using psychoanalysis theory as an approach that led to the findings that Chee Seng, the main character of the novel developed neurotic, realistic, and moral anxiety. In order to cope with these anxieties, Chee Seng developed defense mechanisms that consisted of repression, reaction formation, splitting, idealization, thinking, and defense against shame.
