The purposes of this study are: (1) to identify types of themes used in Lyrics from the song included in the Backstreet Boys Album “The Greatest Video Hits – Chapter One” (2) to find how meaning is realized through theme inBackstreet Boys’ Song lyrics.The design of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The research subject of this study is song lyrics from The Backstreet Boys song compilation album titled “The Greatest Video Hits – Chapter One”. The data collection technique is Documentation by using the Content Analysis Technique. To analyze the data, this study uses The Theme and Rheme analytical framework proposed by M.A.K Halliday (2004).The study discovered the following findings: (1) there are three types of Themes found in Backstreet boy’s selected song lyrics from the first compilation album titled The Greatest Video Hits-Chapter One. The types of themes found are Ideational/Topical Theme, Textual Theme, and Interpersonal Theme. (2) After analyzing the data fromBackstreetBoys’ selected song lyrics from 122 clauses,it can be seen that there are 165 Themes found in total numbers. As a result, the researcher concluded that from 165 Themes there are 122 topical Theme as the most dominant Type, 23 textual Theme, and 20 interpersonal Theme as the least dominant type. Simultaneously, we can find and observe different kind of pattern for each Type of Theme from each song we used as the research material. Ideational Theme have the same pattern as the most dominant Type of Theme that occurred in each song lyrics. meanwhile there are different form of pattern involving Interpersonal theme and Textual theme which change dynamically according to the intention andmassage the author try to create for their song lyrics.
