Colonial Discourse and Identity Crisis in Native American Society Reflected in Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian Novel
This study is purposed to examine the forms of colonial discourse and also how colonial discourse affected the identity crisis in native Indian society that is reflected in Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian Novel. This research is analyzed by using the postcolonial perspective, specifically with the theory of colonial discourse such as the representation of Other, mimicry, and hybridity, and also the theory of identity crisis. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative research methodology and descriptive research.
The results of this study showed that there are three forms of colonial discourse in The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian Novel. These colonial discourses are the representation of Other, mimicry, and hybridity. Furthermore, this study also revealed how each of these forms of colonial discourse affected identity crisis by generating a sense of alienation and displacement within native Indian society. All the representations are represented through the focalization between native Indian and white society that focused upon native Indian society as a subject.
