Racism Issues in Loving Film
The purpose of this research is to find the level of racism that happened to the main characters as seen in the Loving film. Furthermore, the other purpose is to find the effect of racism toward the main characters as depicted in the film. In this research, the researcher focuses on examining racism by using Jones’s and Day’s theory about the level of racism and also focuses on the effect of racism itself. This research is classified as film studies and the researcher used qualitative methods because the data consists of dialogues and scenes from the Loving film. This research also used Mikos theory of data analysis. In this film, the researcher found the three levels of racism. First is intitutionalized racism, which comes from the regulation of Virginia that is considered unconstitutional. This racism has a positive effect on the main characters. They fight for equal rights and also feel motivated and responsible to the people who are in the same situation like them. Second is personally mediated racism. The main characters experienced racism by white police officer who made the statement that black people and white people should be separated. This racism brings negative effect for the main characters. The negative effect is disfavor the society. The last level that appear in this film is internalized racism. This racism comes from disbelief, insecure and different feelings about their own group. This racism also gives a negative effect for the main characters, that is psychological violence.
