The Portrayal of Racism towards African-American Society in Jodi Picoult's Small Great Things Novel
Racism is a belief held by individuals or groups that they are superior to people of other races. This example of an issue can be found in the novel, one of them is Small Great Things. This research aims to analyze how racism is portrayed in Small Great Things novel. The data were generated from words, phrases, and sentences based on dialogues, narrations, and monologues that indicated racism treatments in the novel. This research examined how racism is portrayed in seven different ways, they are representational, ideological, discursive, interactional, institutional, structural, and systematic in Small Great Things novel. Those representations were portrayed by an indirect presentation such as in the way of the character's speech, external appearance, and environment in the story.
