Writing Exercises of English Textbook Entitled "Passport to The World" Published by Platinum For The Eighth Grade Students of Junior High School

The purpose of this study was know the types of writing exercise in the textbook and to know whether textbook is relevant with 2013 curriculum by Government. The method used in this research was qualitative research and it was designed in a descriptive study. The source of the data was English textbook entitled “Passport To The World”. The researcher used table inventory data and textbook evaluation instrument from BNSP. First, reading English textbook and then selected which exercise can be considered as the writing exercise in every unit of the textbook. Second, categorized into some types of writing exercise based on the theories which is will be used to analyze the data. The researcher analyzed with triangulation theory from Paul Nation’s theory and Brown’s theory about writing exercises. Last, the researcher interpreted for conclusion in a brief description about the result of data.

The result showed that based on Paul Nation’s categorization, the experience exercise was 27 exercises with percentage 31.04%. The shared experience was 8 exercises with percentage 9.20%. The guided exercise was 37 exercises with percentage 42.52%. And for the independent exercise was 15 exercises with percentage 17.24%. Based on Brown’s categorization, For mechanical writing, the researcher found 33.33% with 29 exercises. For responsive writing was found 22.99% with 20 exercises. The intensive writing was found 31 exercises with 35.63%. and extensive writing was found 8.05% with 7 exercises. It can be concluded that guided exercise had certain similarity with insentive writing based on Brown’s categorization, the core of meaning was same and to be dominant writing exercises on the textbook. The researcher found five types of writing exercises which they all were combining from two based categorization from Paul Nation and Brown. From the analysis of textbook whether relevant with curriculum 2013 was relevant.
