CLASS OPPRESSION IN VICTORIA AVEYARD'S RED QUEEN NOVEL
This study is aimed to identify the types of social classes and kinds of class oppression depicted in Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen novel. To achieve the purposes of the study, the researcher applied Karl Marx’s social class and class oppression theory. This research used the qualitative method and Marxist criticism to analyze the social issue of class oppression in the novel. The data source of this research was the Red Queen novel written by Victoria Aveyard. The data were taken in the forms of dialogue and narration in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs from the novel which indicated the Marxism value of social class and oppression. The result of this research showed there were two classes: bourgeoisie and proletariat. The bourgeoisie was indicated as someone who has property and the mean of production and power and they illustrated by silver blood. While the proletariat was indicated as someone who powerlessness, tired, hungry, and most of them were thieves or slaves and illustrated by red blood. Furthermore, there were five kinds of class oppression, first, exploitation was an act when the bourgeoisie did not give the proletariat a proper salary based on what they did. Second, marginalization was the separation of the environment between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Third, powerlessness, namely the proletariat had no right and ability to voice or refuse something to the bourgeoisie. Fourth, cultural imperialism was the culture of the majority that the minority must follow. Lastly, violence was an act of physical assault by someone who considers themselves to be the majority.
