The objective of this present study was to explore the types of politeness strategy used by the lecturer and also find the sociological variables which influencethe politeness strategies used by the lecturer at English Literature Department of Mulawarman University. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method and the subject of this research was a lecturer. The technique of collecting data used by the researcher were making observations and recording videos, then writing the script from the video’s observation. The data were analyzed in several steps such as data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The finding showed three types of politeness strategy used by the lecturer, there were; Bald on record, Positive politeness, and Negative politeness. The sociological variableswhich were founded influenced the lecturer in choosing the types of politeness strategies which consist of social distance, relative power, and rank of imposition.
