The purposes of this study were to find out what is politeness strategies used by seventh semester English Language Education Program students in communicating with their lecturers via SMS in academic context and to find out what are the most dominant strategy practiced by students in texting to their lecturers in academic context This study was a qualitative study. The samples of the study were 15 seventh students of English Language Education Program of Mulawarman University. The researcher chose 15 English Department students by using purposive sampling. The data had been collected through screen shot of text messaging between students and lecturer. This qualitative study focused more on analyzing text sent by the students who are in the process of writing their project as the instruments. This study revealed the following findings: First, the students used four strategies of politeness strategies, they were off record, negative politeness, positive politeness and bald on record. Types of politeness strategies used by students, from the total number of 72 Data, the researcher found 10 were used off record, 18 were used positive politeness, 37 were used negative politeness, and 7 were used bald on record. Second, the use of politeness strategy by students were dominated by negative politeness strategy. This negative politeness strategy is mostly used since this conversation is for educational purpose and it can be the most recommended strategy to save hearer’s face.
