Dianingrum, Dwita Putri. 2022. Lexical Bundles in Thesis Abstracts Written by Under-Graduate EFL Students of Mulawarman University: Corpus-Based Study. Thesis – English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Mulawarman University. Advisors: (1) Prof. Dr. Muh. Saraka, M.Pd; (2) Dr. Yuni Utami Asih, M.Pd.
The lexical bundles dealt with recurrent expression consisting of three or more words regardless of their idiomatic and structural. The current study explored the use of lexical bundles structurally and functionally in the English thesis abstracts written by the under-graduate EFL students of Mulawarman University.
The design of this study was qualitative flow analysis of using a corpus linguistic approach. The source data came from the 20 English thesis abstracts written by the under-graduate EFL students of Mulawarman University. The researcher acted as the key instrument in the data collection and data analysis and used AntConc version 3.5.8 for windows as supporting instrument. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the theoretical framework of structural types of lexical bundles of Biber, Conrad & Cortes (2004) and the functional classification of lexical bundles modified by Hyland (2008). The data were analyzed by using AntConc version 3.5.8 for windows in order to locate the existence of lexical bundles on the thesis abstracts and also it used the flow qualitative data analysis model of Miles & Huberman (1994), covering data reduction, data display and conclusion/verification.
The research findings of this present study showed that; (1) the structural types of lexical bundles found in the thesis abstracts written by the undergraduated EFL students of Mulawarman University were the lexical bundles incorporated with verb phrase fragments, dependent clause fragments, and noun phrase & prepositional phrase fragments; (2) the functions of lexical bundles found in the thesis abstracts written by the under-graduated EFL students of Mulawarman University were research oriented bundles, text-oriented bundles, and participant-oriented bundles.
Concerning the presented research findings above, it implied that the lexical bundles existed on the under-graduate EFL students’ thesis abstracts as the variations and enrichment of formulaic language structures and functions on the academic texts, especially English thesis abstracts.
