Politeness Strategies Used By Male And Female Teachers During The Teaching And Learning Process At Lingua Knowledge
This thesis entitled “Politeness Strategies Used by Male and Female Teacher During the Teaching and Learning Process at Lingua Knowledge”. The objectives of this study are to (1) describe the types of politeness strategies employed by male and female teachers in their utterances during the teaching and learning process and to (2) discuss the most frequent politeness strategies employed by male and female teachers. This research was ethnoghraphy qualitative research. It was concern with the observation model in the form of utterances produced by the teachers. In data collecting procedure, the researcher used observation and interview techniques. In conducting this research, the researcher (1) recorded the audio of teaching and learning process from the beginning until the end of the class, (2) transcribed the audio-recording into the convention transcript, (3) selected and clasified the transcript into four strategies of Politeness Strategies based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, (4) reported the findings, and (5) presented the data in the discussion. The interview was used to verify the correct use of each male and female teachers’ politeness strategy. The result showed that in his utterances male teacher employed four types of Politeness Strategies; Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Off-Record, and Negative Politeness. In her utteraces female teacher employed four types of politeness Strategies; Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record. The most frequent of Politeness Strategy employed both of male and female teachers is Positive Politeness Strategy with 61 utterances by male teacher and 100 utterances by female teacher. The difference between the two were the order of using politeness strategy, where male teacher used Off-Record as the third strategy and Negative Politeness as the fourth strategy. While female teacher used Negative Politeness as the third strategy and Off-Record as the fourth strategy.
