Code switching occurs in bilingual or multilingual language community which changes from using one language into another. This study focused on the use of English and Indonesian at SMPN 7 and the change from Indonesian into the local language when communicating with the other persons. The aim of this study was to what types of code switching used by the English teacher at SMP Negeri 7 Samarinda in her interacting with her students, the other teachers and the writer? What motivated her to use code switching when communicating with her students, the other teachers and the researcher?
Research method used in this study was qualitative with one person taken as the research subject. Research instruments used were observation and interview. The data taken for research purposes were collected from the observations conducted at school during the Covid-19 pandemic in which the research participant was observed how she had interacted with her students, the other teachers and the writer. All data collected were recorded on the mobile phone and transcribed accordingly for data analysis using document analysis.
Results of the study showed that the English teacher code switched into her local language Banjarese when she interacted with the teachers who speak the same language and with the writer. This was because she felt comfortable and felt closed with the people who have the same local language background. She also code switched into Indonesian in teaching English to her students because she felt they could understand more when being explained in Indonesian. In conclusions Code switching was express because there is strong relationship between ethnicity and code switching. Sharing the same ethnicity does motivate people to use code switching.
