This research is concerned with the deconstruction of Thanos' character in Avengers: Infinity War 2018 film. This research aimed to describe his character and deconstruct his privileged meaning using the determined binary oppositions based on the hero concept. This research used a qualitative research design with a descriptive method. The data in this research were quotations, narrations, words, phrases, clauses, sentences, or paragraphs related to Thanos' character and obtained by watching the film and reading the film's script. Furthermore, in the analysis, the portrayal of Thanos' character and characterization in the film is described by using Boggs and Petrie's Narrative Fiction, which contains appearance, action, dialogue, the reaction of other characters, and choice of name. Then, his character is deconstructed using the determined binary oppositions based on the hero concept: handsome vs. ugly, love vs. hate, win vs. lose, good vs. evil, powerful vs. weak, and secret vs. public. These determined binary oppositions within Thanos' character are analyzed using Jacque Derrida's Deconstruction. The finding showed that all Boggs and Petrie's Narrative Fiction sub-categorizations were presented and explained through six data in the film and the script. The researcher deconstructed Thanos' character in the film and discovered that his previous fixed view as the villain is not absolute. The researcher concluded that Thanos inherited heroic and villainous traits and simultaneously ignored some of them. Thus, the meaning of his character is undecidable. This research implicated that literary works never have a fixed or absolute meaning so that audiences or readers should not be trapped in only one perspective. There are always other perspectives to interpret a text in literary works.
