Racial Discrimination Against African American In Nic Stone's Dear Martin Novel
Racial discrimination is a differential action towards other according to their race, sometimes it can be harmful and is very disadvantaging. As a group that shares the same physical traits, the African-Americans often experience racism. The purpose of this research is: (1) to reveal levels of racism experienced by the African-American, and (2) to know the concept of power among races as depicted in Dear Martin novel. This research employed qualitative method and Miles and Huberman’s data analysis for the novel. Furthermore, the researcher focused on examining the racial discrimination by using Camara Jones’s theory about the levels of racism and Michel Foucault’s concept of power. In this novel, the researcher found three levels of racism, namely: (1) institutionalized racism which is marked by how the law and the higher ups treated the black people, (2) personally mediated racism is shown by the the lack of respect and suspicion, and the last, (3) internalized racism is marked by the acceptance of negative stigma from the white people to the black people. Further, the concept of power also appeared as it is marked by how the racial discrimination still happens because of the power relation which result to resistance from the African American’s side who wanted to receive full equality in regard to race.
