Writing may be a difficult task for many ESL and EFL students due to a lack of English vocabulary and grammatical knowledge. Analyzing literary works such as prose is one of several writing activities that can help students improve their writing skills and motivation. The writing task of an essay analyzing several distinct themes from literary works such as poetry or prose can help students develop their intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy for writing. This study intended to gain an insight regarding to the correlation between intrinsic motivation, writing self-efficacy and writing literary analysis essay through correlation analysis study. This study employed correlational study which took second year students of English department of Mulawarman university as the sample by using Intrinsic Motivation Scale designed and developed by Ryan and Deci (1987) & writing Self-Efficacy scale proposed by Bruning et al (2013) as the instruments to collect the data regarding to intrinsic motivation and writing self efficacy. The data regarding to students’ writing on essay were obtained through final exam which demanded them to write analysis essay on literature works. The results of the study were; 1) There was significant and strong correlation between intrinsic motivation and writing literary analysis, 2) There was a significant and moderate correlation between writing self-efficacy and writing literary analysis and 3) There was a significant correlation between intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy and writing literary analysis essay in simultaneous way Keywords: intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, literary essay.
