Students and Teacher’s Perception toward the Use of Code Switching in EFL Classroom at SMA Negeri 1 Samarinda

This study was aimed to know the students’ perception toward the use of code switching in EFL classroom and to know the teacher’s perception toward the use of code switching in EFL classroom. This study used a qualitative design. The data were collected by using two types of instruments: questionnaire and interview guide. The subjects were the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Samarinda in the academic year 2019/2020. The questionnaire was used to find out the 30 students’ perception level toward the use of code switching. Six students were selected as the interviewee. They had high level of perception (positive perception) and the others had low level of perception (negative perception) toward the use of code switching in EFL classroom.
The finding of this study showed that the students had positive perception toward the use of code switching in EFL classroom. The result of the mean score of the questionnaire was 54 and was defined as the students had positive perceptions toward the use of code switching. The students had different ideal language and language preference, some of them mostly agreed that code switching is needed in their English learning process. The students also obtained more vocabulary with the help of code switching and it helped them to understand in depth about the topic they learn in the EFL classroom. The students felt comfortable with the use of code switching in the class because it relieved the students from nervousness and fear of making mistakes. Furthermore, the students believed that the teacher who used code switching in the EFL classroom was caring about the students, fair to all the students, and admirable. The teacher mentioned that the engagement or the relation between teacher and students was better with the use of code switching in EFL classroom. But the use of code switching is not always significantly help the students to pass the examination. The researcher found that to pass the examination, the students had to practice a lot, do the exercises, and experience failure about the specific concepts or theories.
