The use of English textbook really has the excellence for both teachers and learners. It is not only become a guide for teachers to deliver the material but also it presents the input through so many explanation and activities. In Indonesia, textbooks still became the main instrument for English learning. Related to that, Indonesia’s current curriculum, 2013 Curriculum (K13) is intended to make Indonesian students be productive, creative, innovative, and effective by empowering and integrating attitudes, skills, and knowledge. “Bahasa Inggris When English Rings a Bell Kelas VII” is one of the textbook that is used in several schools in Samarinda and published by Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia.
This study aimed to analyze the content of “When English Rings a Bell” for seventh graders textbook in order to know which instructions in activities could provoke the students’ thinking to be either in LOTS or HOTS based on cognitive domain. The current study is a descriptive content analysis paper that followed a checklist containing the cognitive levels of Bloom Taxonomy as well as a checklist of possible verbs that combined the Revised Taxonomy as well. The steps of qualitative research include the data collection and data analysis. The researcher investigated the textbook as the research object and did the analysis by broke down the reading materials in the book.
The finding in this study indicated that majority of the cognitive objectives in “When English Rings A Bell” English textbook for VII Grade Junior High School belong to both LOTS (remembering and applying) and HOTS (analyzing). It was proven by 72 activities which were categorized as lower order thinking skills, while only 16 activities that belong to higher order thinking skills.
