Mimicry and Hybridity through Japanese Society in The Last Samurai Movie
This research analyzes mimicry and hybridity concepts by Homi K. Bhabha in The Last Samurai movie. The objective of this study is to describe how mimicry and hybridity showed through Japanese characters in the movie that forms of the theories shown through their practices in applying American culture to create a new way of life and be more modern like the western countries. This research uses descriptive qualitative research design. The data are narrations, dialogues, and scenes that are related to mimicry and hybridity. The data are analyzed by using Bhabha’s theory and then the process of data analysis is using Miles and Huberman’s theory. In the results of this study, researchers found the forms of mimicry and hybridity that Japanese characters used for the sake of modernity, which was depicted through western's rifle, black suits, and English language.
