POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN TEACHER-STUDENT ONLINE CLASSROOM INTERACTION DURING COVID-19 OUTBREAK AT VACATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN TENGGARONG

Many students speak impolitely and even, sometimes they talk to their teacher without showing any respect. Based on this phenomenon, teachers have a big duty and responsibility to teach their students how to behave and speak politely, in order to create an effective learning situation. This study aimed to find out the politeness strategies used by the teacher and the reason underlying why the teacher used certain politeness strategies. The design of this study was qualitative design using a case study approach. This study was held at SMK Pharmacy Tenggarong. The researcher involved an English teacher and her eleventh grade students who meet the criteria. The instrument tools of this study were observation guide and unstructured interview guide. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the three methods of data analysis by Miles and Huberman (2014). The findings of this study showed that, the politeness strategies produced by English teachers in teaching English at SMK Pharmacy Tenggarong were bald on-record strategy, positive politeness strategy, and negative politeness strategy. The reasons underlying the teacher used certain politeness strategies were: (1) the teacher used bald on record strategy because she wanted to make her students easier to understand her command in order to prevent misinterpretation and misunderstanding between the teacher and the students; (2) the teacher used positive politeness strategy because she wanted to notice her students needs and condition during the learning process, she also wanted to be closer to her students so that her students can be more comfortable to convey their ideas, furthermore she also practiced this strategy in order to appreciate her students’ work; (3) the teacher used the negative politeness strategy because she wanted to show her respect to her students in order to create effective online learning situation and educate the students’character including good attitude, moral value and respect each other. This study focused to analyze the use of politeness strategies in the online learning process, therefore the researcher suggest for further researcher to analyze the politeness strategies in all the level of high school.
