AN ANALYSIS ON TEACHER’S FEEDBACK AND STUDENTS’ RESPONSES ON RECOUNT WRITTEN TEXT OF THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS IN SMP NEGERI 2 SAMARINDA

Feedback is any response from a teacher in regard to a student’s performance or behavior. Teacher’s feedback in this research is defined as any written input provided by the teacher to students’ revision. The goals of this study were to know the types of teacher’s feedback and students’ response on written recount text.
This research is aimed at analyzing the types of teacher’s feedback and students’ response on recount written text. Two research questions are formulated in this research. They are (1) What types of feedback are provided by teacher on students’ recount texts? (2) What are the students’ responses to teacher’s feedback on their recount texts?
The design of the study was descriptive qualitative because it intended to find types of teacher’s feedback and students’ response on recount written text. The participants of this study were the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Samarinda. The data is analyzed using data analysis technique by Miles and Huberman that consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Typology of teacher’s feedback by Ellis is used as the instrument. To know students’ response on teacher’s feedback, interview is used to collect the data.
The findings of this study showed that four types of feedback is found on students’ recount text . There were Direct corrective feedback, Indirect corrective feedback, Reformulation corrective feedback and Metalinguistic corrective feedback. Based on the analysis, it is figured out that the teacher mostly gave Direct corrective feedback to students’ recount text,.
Related to the second research question, the research result showed that (1) Feedback is very important for students’. (2) Feedback is able to improve students’ writing (3) Teacher with feedback is more caring than other who does not give feedback. (4) Feedback is sometimes hard to understand (5) Students’ do not revise their paper after given feedback. For the next researchers who are willing to do the research in the same field, they are suggested to analyze the types of teacher’s feedback on other types of text.
