Abstract
To avoid misunderstanding in communication, one needs to understand the implicit meaning of an utterance, and to be aware of the purpose of uttering it, it is required learning about speech act.
The researcher was interested to find out what are the speech acts that appeared in main characters in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow Part 1. The researcher studied about the conversation between the main characters to find out (1)the illocutionary acts occurred in the conversation between Harry’s, Ron’s and Hermione’s character in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2)the perlocutionary acts occurred in the conversation between Harry’s, Ron’s and Hermione’s character in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
The researcher used content analysis techniques to reveal the findings of the study by characterizing the speech acts in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow part 1.
The researcher took the data from the transcript to analyze the speech acts in main character’s conversation. She was sampling the transcript and extracted the data so that the data were easy to analyze. Since the research used descriptive qualitative study, the research instrument was the researcher herself.
Having analyzed the data, the researcher revealed the following findings (1) the most illocutionary act is asking mostly produced by Harry Potter. (2)the most perlocutionary act is scaring which is used to scare Harry..
Finally, it was suggested that the linguistics learners could explore and learn more about speech act that raised miscommunication. Moreover, the future researcher can conduct the study about speech act to be more understand the usage of Discourse Analysis and Semantics in analyzing speech acts in film.
