The Effect of Using Information Gap Towards Speaking Ability of The Seventh-Grade Students of SMP Dharma Husada Penajam Paser Utara in Academic Year 2020/2021

The purpose of this study was: (1) To know students’ speaking ability of experimental and control groups before using information gap (2) To know the significant difference in students’ speaking ability of experimental group between pre-test and post-test after using information gap (3) To know the significant difference in students’ speaking ability between experimental and control groups in SMP Dharma Husada Penajam Paser Utara in academic years 2020/2021 after using information gap. The design of this study was quasi-experimental. The sample of this study was seventh-grade with 38 students whereas VII-A was an experimental class and VII-B was a control class. The data were obtained through the pre-test and post-test. The t-test was used to analyze the data. A paired sample t-test was used to determine the significant difference in speaking ability before and after using the information gap. The findings of this study showed that in the experimental class the mean score in the pre-test was 60 and in the control group 52.5. Meanwhile, the mean score of the experimental class in the post-test was 77,2, and in the control group 62.2. It can be concluded in the table that showed the value of T-computation was 2.838, where the significant level at 5% (1.688). It showed that the compute t-score was higher than the t-table with the result as (2.838 > 1.688). Based on the result of the calculation of the t-test, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It meant there was a significant effect between students’ scores in learning speaking by using information gap and without using information gap. In conclusion, using the information gap was effective and applicable for teaching speaking at the seventh grade of SMP Dharma Husada Penajam Paser Utara.
