THE USE OF TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE ( TPR )METHOD IN TEACHING READING OF THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF SMKN 8 SAMARINDA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2014/2015

The use of Total Physical Response (TPR) method in teaching reading of the first years students of SMKN 8 Samarinda in Academic years 2015/2016 Nur Halimah; 1005085202; English Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Mulawarman University.

The researcher chooses this topic, because in this era, in line with the newest curriculum, a teacher must be professional. The teacher must have a good quality, so it is necessary to apply some strategies in the teaching and learning process. The researcher chooses the TPR method because the method is a challenging method, and it is seldom used in the learning of Senior High School students. So, the researcher want try to experiment with TPR method.
The purpose this research was to know difference between before and after use of TPR method in taught reading comprehension to the first year students of SMKN 8 Samarinda in academic year 2015/2016. The design of this research is Pre-experimental design.
The researcher applied the pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test design. The pre-test was given to figure out the student’s prior knowledge in comprehending the text. Pre-test was given before treatment, while post-test was given after treatment to find out differences achievement before and after using TPR method in doing the reading materials test. The population of the research was the first years SMKN 8 Samarinda which is consisted 30 of students in one class.
The findings of the research showed that the mean score of before taught by using TPR was 70.5 it mean ( good ) and the mean score of after taught by using TPR was 84.10 its mean (Excellent). The result of the data indicates that there weresignificances different between pre-test and post-test of the student’s achievement before and after giving treatment. The value of t-test (3.054) was greater than t-table (1.992) or 3.054 > 1.992 at the level significance (p) = 0.05. It can be concluded that TPR method could improve the student’s reading comprehension.
Researcher suggested that the English teacher can use TPR in teaching English. This method will be able to motivate students to learn and enjoy learning English without spending much time to reading text, the students are be able to be more active and more motivated in learning language, the researcher realized that this research was limited with the times, so the researcher hopes the other researcher who will conduct a research in similar field can manage the time, this research was only conducted with six meetings, the other researcher can do the treatment more than six meeting to strengthen the finding.
