There are 4 basic skills in English, namely speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Two of them (speaking and writing) are heavily related to grammar. The researcher wants to investigate the students’ evaluation of grammar learning in the classroom. The purposes of this study were to find out the evaluation of the fourth-semester students in grammar learning in the classroom, to find out the evaluation of the sixth-semester students in grammar learning in the classroom, and to find out the differences of the evaluations from the fourth semester and sixth-semester students.
The design of this study was a quantitative approach by using a causalcomparative design. The source of data for this study was taken from the questionnaire given to the fourth semester and sixth-semester students of the English Department of Mulawarman University with a total sample of 60 students. To collect and analyze the data, SPSS 25 was used to analyze the mean score, standard deviation, and independent t-test.
The researcher found out both Group A (fourth-semester students) and Group B (sixth-semester students) had a different choice in several statements inside the questionnaire. Group A has an average score of 105.22, and Group B has an average score of 105.78. Both of the scores were compared by using a formula devised by Frankel and Wallen (2009) and categorized as having a ‘positive’ evaluation. It also has been calculated that the t-score of equal variances assumed is 0.023, and the researcher read the t-table distribution. It is found that df (58) has a score of 1.672. Thus, the result is 0.023 kurang dari 1.672, which means that Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected – it means that there were no significant differences between fourth-semester students and sixth-semester students in grammar learning. The researcher concluded that there are no significant differences between fourth-semester and sixth-semester English Department students of Mulawarman University regarding the evaluation of grammar learning.
However, it is noted that they are able to evaluate the learning process of grammar based on their experience and needs, thus providing insight for the lecturers to provide a better teaching process in the future. The researcher suggested English Department of Mulawarman University to take this study as a reference in understanding and evaluating the teaching process of grammar that the lecturers had done, thus preparing some alternatives if they found a problem inside.
