Illocutionary Acts Found in Donald Trump’s Speech Make America Great Again in Michigan
This study focuses on Donald Trump’s speech when he was the president of the United State entitled: Make America Great Again in Michigan. The purposes of this study are to find the types of illocutionary acts and to discover the most frequently type used in Trump's speech. The researcher used the content analysis method by watching the speech of Trump, collecting the data which are related to the research, observing and analyzing the types of illocutionary acts in his speech concerning speech act theory by J.R Searle and Vanderveken (1985) and other theories to support the thesis. The researcher found and analyzed 36 data of illocutionary acts which were used by Trump in his speech, they were six data of assertives, ten data of directives, eight data of commissives, four data of expressives, and eight data of declarations. The study revealed that the most frequent type of illocutionary act used by Trump was directives. By finding out the type of illocutionary acts in Trump's speech, people can find that Trump tries to convince the people that Republican is a way to Make America Great Again. The results of this study increase knowledge to literature students about the illocutionary acts found in every speech occasion and give understanding to the reader or next researchers about the illocutionary act in communication and we as the society can realize that the illocutionary acts always exist in our communication.
