Self-Actualization of The Main Character, Noah Calhoun In The Notebook Novel

Self-actualization is an innate tendency toward growth that motives all human behaviours and results in the full realization of a person’s higher potential proposed by Kasschau in 1995. Self-actualized people are those who were fulfilled and doing all they were capable of, and the idea of being self-actualized person is developed, because once someone satisfy the four needs, the self-actualization can be reached. According to Maslow, the Self-actualized persons are models of maturation and health, fulfilling themselves by using their capacities and qualities to the upmost. Self-actualized person does not only exist in real life but also occurs in literary work such as novel entitled The Notebook. Therefore, this research was focused on analyzing characteristics of self-actualized person which was done by main character in The Notebook novel. The purpose of this study is to describe how Noah Calhoun revealed his self-actualization and also his characteristics being self-actualized person. This study was conducted by using qualitative method since it focused on understanding the phenomena which are experienced by the main character. Dealing with the research purpose, it was found that Noah Calhoun has attained his physiological needs, safety and security needs, love and belonging needs, and esteem needs sufficiently and it can be seen in what Noah Calhoun does and the situation that he faces in the novel. There were 40 data that contained hierarchy of needs and 38 data that contained characteristics of self-actualized persons. In addition, Noah Calhoun has reached his self-actualization which can be seen in his specific characteristics as Maslow has theorized indicated from what he does and the situation he faces in the novel.
