LEARNER AUTONOMY: TEACHER'S AND STUDENT'S PERCEPTION IN LANGUAGE LEARNING AT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN BONTANG

The purpose of this study was to explore the student's and teacher perception of learner autonomy in language learning, and to find out whether there are differences or similarities in their perception of learner autonomy in language learning. The design of this study was a survey design within a quantitative approach. The data were collected using a questionnaire developed by Joshi (2011), Ningsi (2019), and Parahi (2015) to measure their perception of learner autonomy in language learning. This study's sample was third-grade students at senior high schools in Bontang that were SMK 1, SMA 2, and SMA 3, by a total of 213 participants. Furthermore, this study's data were analyzed with help from SPSS 25 application to find their perception's mean score. The study revealed the following findings: 1) The researcher found that students in senior high schools agreed about learner autonomy in language. It was showed by their autonomous in learning process. 2) the researcher found the teacher strongly agreed about the learner autonomy in language learning. The teacher belive the precess of learning could be done without teacher and the confidence from the students could be motivated the students autonomy. 3) There are different perceptions of teachers and students in terms of students should be able to determine goals and make decisions in their own learning, and also in learning can be done withput teacher, that impact could be refer to the different knowledge between students and teachers of Autonomy and also lack of teacher ability in promote the Autonomy.
