The Effect of Using Short Story on Students' Vocabulary Mastery at the Tenth Grade Students of SMK Negeri 9 Samarinda

This research was aimed to investigate the effect of using short story on students’ vocabulary mastery and the significant effect between two groups of students: the ones who were taught by using short story and the ones who were taught without using short story. This research used experimental as the research design. The population of this research was tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 9 Samarinda. There are 272 students and 68 students were taken as the sample. Try-out test were conducted to 34 students at SMK Negeri 9 Samarinda to find out the degree of difficulty, discriminating power, reliability, and validity of the test. The researcher used 40 items multiple choices test as an instrument for pre-test and post-test. The data of the test were analyzed by using t-test formula to know significant difference of students’ vocabulary mastery before and after taught using short story. The research is revealed that there is significant difference on the effect of using short story on students’ vocabulary mastery. It is proved that 75,51 were the mean score of experimental group which was higher than 51,54 the mean score of control group. That is, the experimental group students had significantly better vocabulary scores on post-test than the control group students at the end of the study. The result of the t-test based on the calculation of SPSS 20, t-value 15.960 and t-table at the selected significance level of 0,05 for degree of freedom 66 is 2.000. It could be seen that t-value > t-table. The alternative hypothesis (Ha), “There is significant difference on the effect of using short story on students’ vocabulary mastery” is accepted, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. It is concluded that, the contribution of short story on vocabulary mastery to tenth grade students led to a higher level of vocabulary mastery.
