The purposes of this study were to find out the students’ level of grammar mastery and translation ability, also the correlation between grammar mastery and translation ability of the seventh semester students of English Education Department at Mulawarman University.
The design of this study was quantitative approach. The sample of this study was 60 students of the English Education Department batch 2016. The instruments of this study consisted of two tests: (1) Grammar test with 25 multiple choices questions, (2) Translation Test, the students were needed to translate a text from Indonesian to English.
The result of this study showed that the students had a proficient level in grammar mastery, and good translation qualification in translation ability. The Pearson Product Moment formula is used to find out the coefficient of the students’ grammar mastery and translation ability. The correlation value (r value) was 0.799 and the r table was 0.2144. It means that r value was higher than r table, therefore Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. It can be concluded that there was a high correlation between the students’ grammar mastery and translation ability. Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that the grammar mastery can influence the translation ability.
