The purposes of this study were: (1) To know the mastery of simple past tense of the tenth grade students of SMAIT GRANADA in the academic year 2020/2021, (2) To know the critical thinking of the tenth grade students of SMAIT GRANADA Samarinda in the academic year 2020/2021, (3) To know the correlation between students’ mastery of simple past tense and ability in writing narrative text of the Tenth Grade students’ of SMAIT GRANADA Samarinda in the academic year 2020/2021. The design of this study was correlational. The population on this study was 70 students while the samples taken were 30 samples.
There were two data in this study, namely as students’ mastery of simple past tense and their ability in writing narrative text. The data was collected by conducting simple past tense and writing narrative text. The finding was showed that regarding to the data of students mastery of simple past tense was on excellent level. The data regarding to the student’s ability in writing narrative text was also showed that the student’s ability in writing narrative text was on excellent level.
To analyze the correlation, Pearson Product Moment was used in this study. The statistical result by using SPSS showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ mastery of simple past tense and ability in writing narrative text of the Tenth Grade students’ of SMAIT GRANADA Samarinda in the academic year 2020/2021 as the p-value was 0,000 which smaller than 0,005 that proved the alternative hypothesis was accepted while null hypothesis was rejected. The correlation coefficient was 0,731 which the strength is considered as strong correlation. Therefore, this study proved that there was a significant correlation between students’ mastery of simple past tense and ability in writing narrative text of the Tenth Grade students’ of SMAIT GRANADA Samarinda in the academic year 2020/2021.
