THE CORRELATION BETWEEN LISTENING TO ENGLISH SONGS AND VOCABULARY MASTERY OF SIXTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF FORESTRY DEPARTMENT IN MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY

Listening to English songs is known as one of the learning ways that can improve vocabulary mastery. Most of the sixth-semester students of the Forestry Department like listening to English songs. The purpose of the study was to find out the correlation between students’ listening to English songs and their vocabulary mastery.
The design of this study was a correlational using the quantitative research design. The population of this study was sixth-semester Forestry Department students of Mulawarman University in the Academic Year 2020/2021 with a total sample of 31 students. The instruments used in this study were the questionnaire of listening to English songs and the vocabulary mastery test. The data collection time is different for each instrument to avoid errors or undesirable results. Then the researcher correlates the data by using the formula Pearson Product Moment Correlation in SPSS 25.
This study showed some findings. First, it was found that the mean score of the students listening to English songs was 36.54. Second, it was found that the mean score of the vocabulary mastery test was 69.80. Third, after analyzing the data using the Pearson Product Moment formula, the researcher found that the students’ listening to English songs and their vocabulary mastery had a positive in category “Perfect” correlation with r computed = 0.835. This shows that positive correlation is very strong. It can be stated that the higher the students’ interest in listening to English songs, the higher the students’ vocabulary mastery result. In the future, investigations into other factors that may affect the correlation between listening to English songs and vocabulary mastery should be carried out.
