The Effect of Using English Songs in Listening Activity Toward Vocabulary Achievement of Seventh Grade Students at SMPN 5 Samarinda

The title underlying this research was the effect of using English songs in listening activity toward vocabulary achievement of seventh grade students at SMPN 5 Samarinda. The purposes of this study were to investigate students’ vocabulary achievement without and with using English songs and to find out whether there any significant effect of students’ vocabulary achievement without and with using English songs. The design of this study was quasi experimental. The population was all the seventh grade students in SMPN 5 Samarinda that consisted of 7 (seven) classes with the total number of students was 236. Two classes were used as sample of seventh grade students namely class 7F as the experimental class and class 7G as the control class, 34 students in experimental class used English songs in teaching and learning process, and 34 students in control class used conventional method (without using songs) in teaching and learning process. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to collect the data by giving test that consists of 40 multiple choice items. The data analyzed used T-test by using SPSS version 25. The researcher used T-test in order to find out the significant difference on vocabulary achievement before and after being taught by using English songs. The findings of this research showed that, in experimental class mean score in pre-test was 65.73 and it increased to 79.85 in post-test. It also showed that the result of Sig. 2-tailed was lower than significant level (0.000 < 0.05). Another T-test computation was used in order to see the significant effect between control class and experimental class. The post-test mean score of experimental class was 79.85 and in control 69.11. It also showed that the result of Sig. 2-tailed was lower than significant level (0.000 < 0.05). Thus based on result of the two T-test above it can concluded that the Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. By looking at the analysis of the research findings, it can be concluded that effect on vocabulary achievement between experimental and control class which taught with and without using English songs in listening activity seemed to be significant. It meant that vocabulary achievement which taught by using English songs was better than conventional method. Based on research, teaching with using English songs give better result than without English songs in vocabulary achievement.
