Conversational implicature dealt with an utterance containing an implication or a proposition that appeared because of violating the cooperative principle of conversation in which speaker’s intention is expressed differently in the speaker’s actual utterance. The purposes of this study were; (1) to know the types of conversational implicatures; (2) to know the flouting maxims of conversational implicatures, and (3) to interpret the implied meanings of conversational implicatures in the dialogues of the characters in the Freedom Writers Movie script.

The design of this study was qualitative design. The source data came from the script of the Freedom Writers Movie, written and directed by Richard LaGravene, consisting of sentences/utterances from the conversation related the needed data in this study. The researcher acted as the key instrument in the data collection and data analysis. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the theoretical framework of Grice’s (1975) to support the study. Then, the data were analyzed by using QCA software of Mayring (2014).

The research findings of this study showed that; (1) the types of conversational implicatures found in the dialogue of the characters in the Freedom Writers Movie script were generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature; (2) These mentioned types of conversational implicatures flouted the maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner; and (3) the implied meanings of the conversational implicatures uttered by the characters in the Freedom Writers Movie were intended to give information, to do action, to express feeling, and to show politeness and respect.

Based on the presented research findings above, it implied that the conversational implicatures that flouted the maxims of cooperative principle existed in the dialogues of characters in the movie, especially Freedom Writers Movie.
