The Motivations of Chris Gardner as a Father in The Pursuit of Happyness Film (2006)
Every human being needs motivation in order to do every single activity in life. Motivation can be said as a driving force and the motive of behavior behind humans to do something. This research discusses about the aspects of motivation on Chris Gardner character that motivate him to struggle his life as a father in The Pursuit of Happyness film. The design of this study was a qualitative research. The data used in this research were words (taken from the film script) and figures (taken from the film scenes) of The Pursuit of Happyness film. This research performed the data analysis through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. In analyzing the data, this research used Malsow’s theory of motivation. The results of this research shows five levels that motivate Chris Gardner character to struggle his life as a father in The Pursuit of Happyness film. Those five levels are physiological needs, safety needs, love & belonging needs, self-esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Each level of motivation is fulfilled by Chris Gardner through experiencing difficulties and obstacles in his life. As the conclusion, the five levels of motivation play a crucial role in improving the quality of Chris Gardner’s life.
