FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE NOVEL BY J.K. ROWLING
Literature is one form of arts that expresses human’s feeling and thought. Authors expressed their feeling through literary work such as poem, novel, short story, etc. In those works, readers sometimes find words or sentences which have unliteral meaning. This kind of writing style is called figurative language. This study is about figurative language that are used in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Novel by J.K. Rowling. The objectives of the study are to find out the kinds of figurative language in the novel and also to describe the contextual meaning of figurative language in the novel. The method used in the study is qualitative context analysis. This study was conducted by collecting any relevant data and information about the topic from novel, and internet that are available for the analysis. The data collection used the following steps: reading the novel, and then selecting the data that used the types of figurative language. The steps to analyze the data are identifying the types of figurative language according to Oliver (1994), identifying the contextual meaning of the figurative language, and the last is interpreting the data. The result shows there are 91 sentences that have figurative language. From all the sentences, there are 69 items of simile, 18 items of personification, 2 items of allusion, and 2 items of metaphor. It can be indicated that the dominant type of figurative language in the novel is simile. The author uses figurative language to draw her readers into the wizarding world she has created and encourages the reader to feel what the characters feel, to see what they see. Figurative language plays an important role in this novel. Using figurative language makes the novel more interesting to read, and helps the readers to imagine the story, the character based on the illustration that the author has given in the story. In conclusion, there are four types of figurative language found in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince novel by J.K. Rowling such as simile, personification, metaphor, and allusion and the contextual meaning of each figurative language based on the knowledge about the words used in the novel and also the knowledge about wizarding world.
