RAHAYU, DINA 2020 The Effect of Reading Aloud to Pronunciation Skill by The Fifth Grade Students in SDN 003 Loa Janan. Thesis. English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Mulawarman University, Samarinda. Advisors: (1) Dr. Desy Rusmawaty, MA. (2) Dr. Yuni Utami Asih, M. Pd.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the students’ pronunciation taught with digital stories for reading aloud at fifth grade, to investigate the students’ pronunciation taught without digital stories for reading aloud at fifth grade and to find out whether there is any significant effect on students’ pronunciation taught with and without digital stories for reading aloud. Reading aloud is the process of sounding words using pronounciaton. Furthermore, the independent variable is reading aloud with dependent variable is pronunciation using digital stories. The design of this study was quasi-experimental. The population was all the fifth-grade students’ in SDN 003 Loa Janan that consisted of three classes with the total number of students’ was 96. Two classes were used as the sample, class VB as the experimental group and class VC as the control group. The experimental group was given treatment with reading text in form of sentences and short story video during teaching and learning activity while the control group was not given treatment using short story video, they only study with reading text in the classroom. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to collect the data by giving vowel tests to know students' pronunciation. The test consisted of 32 chosen words from students book. The data were analyzed by using SPSS version 23. The researcher used T-test in order to find out the significant effect in reading aloud to pronunciation skill. The findings of this study showed that, the result of homogeneous test was 0.588 and it mean that was higher than α 0.05. It showed that the data variance were a homogeneous. In conclusion both sample had same ability in English. From the data of experimental class the mean score in pre-test was 67.43 and it increased to 75.09 in post-test. It also showed that the result of Sig. 2-tailed was lower than significant level (0.000 < 0.05). If the significant value is lower, then Ho is rejected, it mean that there is a significant difference between the independent variable on the dependent variable. Another T-test computation was used in order to see the significant effect between control class and experimental class. The post-test mean score of experimental class was 75.09 and in control class was 70.96 it is higher than 0.05.
For the final result is independent sample t-test. The null hypothesis is accepted if sig. 2-tailed is higher than 0.05 and the alternative hypothesis is accepted if sig. 2-tailed is lower than 0.05. The Equal Variances Assumed is 2.137 with (sig. 2-tailed) 0.037. It is lower than 0.05. It meant that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. By looking at the analysis of the research findings, it can be concluded that the effect of reading aloud by digital stories gives effect on students pronunciation. It means that using reading aloud by digital stories can be a new alternative to teach English pronunciation because students will listen to their pronunciation while doing reading aloud indirectly.
