This thesis concerns with examining level and factors of speaking anxiety among the third semester students at English department of Mulawarman University. The purposes of this study were: (1) To find out the students’ anxiety level in learning speaking English; (2) To find out the factors of the students’ anxiety in learning speaking English; (3) To find out the strategies to overcome speaking anxiety.
The design of this study was mixed – method research design. The researcher used one of the major types of mixed – method, namely The Explanatory Design. The population of this study was 100 students of the third semester students at English Department of Mulawarman University in the academic year 2019/2020. The researcher chose students based on three categories which were highly speaking anxiety, moderate speaking anxiety, and slightly speaking anxiety. By having six students as the sample, the data is thick, rich, and various. The researcher has picked two students with highly speaking anxiety, two students with moderate anxiety, and two students with slightly speaking anxiety.
Based on the findings, it was found that: 5 students had slightly anxious. Then, 87 students had moderately anxious. The last, 8 students had a highly anxious. Based on the result it was found that most students had moderate anxiety in speaking. The mean score of the whole sample was 85,01 (moderately anxious) and almost all of the students' anxiety in speaking was moderate (87%). The researcher used the interview to gather the data for two research questions in this study which were the factors causing speaking anxiety and the strategies to overcome speaking anxiety. The factors were classified into three factors which are affective factors, cognitive factors, and linguistic factors. The affective factors were fear of being a focus of attention and fear of making mistakes. The cognitive factors were difficulty in speaking English and the inability to express their ideas in English. The last factor was a linguistic factor, there was a lack of English proficiency which is a lack of pronunciation. The third aim was to find out the strategies used by students to overcome their speaking anxiety. The strategies were having practice, memorizing, doing more preparation, thinking positively, and improving English proficiency. In conclusion, the level of speaking anxiety at the Third Semester student English Department of Mulawarman University was in the moderately anxious category, three major factors causing speaking anxiety, and 5 strategies to overcome speaking anxiety.
The suggestions of the researcher were teachers or lecturers should know the factors and the strategies to overcome students speaking anxiety. Then, the students should be aware of speaking anxiety factors to solve their problems in speaking English. For the next researchers, it would be useful to investigate the speaking anxiety to get a more specific result
