The title underlying this study is speaking problems perceived by second and fourth semester students of English Education Department of Mulawarman University. The design of this study was quantitative descriptive study using survey design. The close-ended questionnaire was used to collect the data. The subject of this study was selected by proportional stratified random sampling technique. The researcher selected sixty students from second semester and seventy students from fourth semester, which are one hundred thirty students in total. In analyzing the data, the researcher calculate the data by using descriptive statistics to know the most frequent speaking problem by SPSS and one way ANOVA to know the significance difference among the two level of semesters.
The findings of the study revealed that from the top three frequent speaking problems, there were four items reported by second and fourth semester students. There were two items related to affective aspect and two items related to linguistics aspect. In addition, the result of one way ANOVA showed that overall there was no significant difference among the second and fourth semester students’ perception of speaking problems. From the results above, the instructor (lecturer) is suggested to mitigate students’ phobia about afraid of making mistakes and encourage them to consider the phenomenon as a natural process of language learning. In addition, the student are suggested to encourage themselves to more practice their speaking whether inside and outside the classroom extensively. The researcher suggests to further researcher who are interested in this topic to conduct the study better than this study.
