The word alienation is currently used to describe objectively observable states of separateness occurring in human groups. In literary works, alienation can be experienced by the character. Alienation seems as the separation feeling from a group or oneself. This study discussed about the alienation in the main character in Chris Cleave’s The Other Hand Novel named Little Bee. The purposes of this thesis are to identify the alienation in Little Bee and describe the way the author characterized the alienation in Little Bee. This study focuses on analyzing the Little Bee’s experiences which leads her into alienation.
The problems formulation were looking for what variants of alienation are found in the major character of novel The Other Hand and how the alienation is represented in the novel The Other Hand. To achieve the aims of this study, researcher employed a library study. This study applied psychological approach to identify Little Bee's alienation. The study used Seeman‘s theory about five variants of alienation and theory characterization by Rimmon Kenan. The result of this research shows that Little Bee‘s experiences lead her into alienation. The researcher found all variants of alienation that were experienced by the main character, which are powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, social isolation and self-estrangement. Data are represented through indirect characterization (action, speech, external appearance, and environment). As conclusion, the researcher concluded that the main character in this novel is an alienated character.
